Shoplifting Suspect Hit By SUV While Fleeing On Long Island
LINDENHURST, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A shoplifting suspect on Long Island was hit by a sport-utility vehicle Wednesday afternoon as he tried to run away, police said.
Douglas Redmond, 28, has since been arrested and charged.
Suffolk County police said Redmond left the Rite Aid drugstore at 600 N. Wellwood Ave. in Lindenhurst, after police saw him swiping hair products, cosmetics, and other miscellaneous items from the shelves.
He ran south from the store and tried to cross Sunrise Highway near Alleghany Avenue, when he was hit by a 2010 Ford Explorer headed west on the highway around 4 p.m., police said.
Redmond, of Central Islip, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, police said. He was treated for a fractured leg and other non-life-threatening injuries.
He was later charged with one count of petit larceny, and was set to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
The 60-year-old West Babylon woman driving the Ford and her 3-year-old granddaughter were also hospitalized for minor injuries after the vehicle hit Redmond, police said.
