According to a report on Gothamist, the man who recorded the video said the victim woke up shortly after the recording was made and punched her attacker.
Jasheem Smiley said he recorded the video and was the recipient of an online backlash for not intervening further.
In response to that, Smiley recorded another video and uploaded it to YouTube defending his decision to make the tape.
Smiley said he knew he needed proof of the assault before he could act.
Smiley said he "alerted the lady as it was happening, I kicked her to wake her up, and she didn't get up." When she was unresponsive, Smiley sought out the conductor and an officer, he said in the video.
"MTA always says 'See something, say something,' that's exactly what I did," Smiley said in the video. "I did the best I can. God knows I did the best I can."
