Ship Discovered At Ground Zero En Route To Maryland
NEW YORK (AP) -- An 18th century ship found buried near the World Trade Center site is on its way to Maryland to be treated and reassembled.
Officials say the carefully packed timbers are scheduled to arrive at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory in St. Leonard at 1 p.m. Monday.
The conservation lab in southern Maryland near the Chesapeake Bay specializes in the treatment of shipwrecks.
Historians believe the ship had been junked when it was used around 1810 as landfill to extend the shores of lower Manhattan. The exact age will be determined by lab analysis.
