Shanahan Says RGIII Will Start Opener For Redskins
ASHBURN, Va. (CBSNewYork/AP) — So much for those last-minute "concerns." RG3 is starting Week 1.
Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that Robert Griffin III will be under center for next week's Monday night opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Griffin was cleared last Thursday to play in Week 1 by his surgeon, Dr. James Andrews. However, Shanahan said at the time that Andrews also had unspecified "concerns."
The coach said he addressed those concerns with Griffin and Andrews on Sunday. Shanahan declined to say what the concerns are: "You'll have to trust us."
The start marks a remarkably expedited return for last year's reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, who had major knee surgery just days after he was injured in the Redskins' playoff loss in January to Seattle.
