Powerful Storms Race Through Tri-State Area
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City was under a severe thunderstorm watch as strong storms were expected to hit the area Sunday evening.
A few strong storms made their way through the region late afternoon through 10 p.m. with high winds taking down trees and power-lines.
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens and Richmond Counties until 10 p.m. In New Jersey, a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Atlantic, Bergen, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Salem, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren Counties, as reported by CBS2's Elise Finch.
Rain started coming down in Essex County as early as 6 p.m., CBS2's Brian Conybeare reported. Drivers took caution as slippery road conditions were expected for the evening.
Brief and intense storms were capable of knocking down trees in Bergen County. Thousands of concert goers got drenched in the parking lot at MetLife stadium in East Rutherford while their tailgating tents were destroyed as they waited for the hip-hop heavy summer jam concert to get started.
A double rainbow could be seen gracing the skies in several areas following rainstorms throughout the region.
