Service Members Head To Ground Zero To Observe Memorial Day
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- For the first time, service members in New York for Fleet Week had an opportunity to observe Memorial Day at the 9/11 Memorial.
As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported Monday, the mission at the 9/11 Memorial is to fulfill a solemn promise made in the days after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 – never forget.

That is exactly how service members view Memorial Day.
"It's about honoring the service; honoring the ultimate sacrifices," said Navy Adm. Scott Stearney.
Marine Gen. Mark Faulkner felt it was fitting to be at ground zero on Memorial Day.
"We can remember not only our military members, but all the first responders here in New York City," Faulkner said.
Faulkner said in 2001, he was one of the first Marines in Afghanistan.
The National Sept. 11 Memorial Museum opened its doors to the public for the first time this past Wednesday.
