Service Briefly Disrupted Across Entire NYC Subway System Due To Power Dip
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - For a few minutes Wednesday morning, the New York City subway system came to a complete stop.
At around 9:45 a.m., Con Ed said it experienced a "system voltage dip," similar to a brownout.
"It was a transmission disturbance on Con Edison equipment that did affect subways and probably a lot of people in large buildings in New York City noticed it with a flickering of lights," Con Ed Spokesman Michael Clendenin told 1010 WINS.
The exact cause of the power dip is being investigated, but Clendenin said it was highly unlikely that it had anything to do with Wednesday's hot weather.
"This is something to do with equipment and we certainly apologize for the momentary disruption," he said. "This is not one of those record-setting days or prolonged heat waves that we're used to in summer."
The dip lasted about five minutes, but it was enough to bring the subway system to a halt, the MTA said. Subways service resumed, but there were residual delays.
