Sen. Schumer Wants Feds To Speed Up Regulations On Commercial Drone Use
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Sen. Charles Schumer is calling for federal regulations on drones following recent sightings of the small, remote controlled aircrafts at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
On Sunday, Schumer said there were three near-misses reported at JFK between drones and aircraft just last week.
The lawmaker said he wants rules on commercial use of drones crafted as soon as possible to prevent potentially deadly incidents.
According to Schumer, civilian drones, despite their beneficial uses, can pose a hazard to other aircraft or pedestrians. He added that the devices can also be used to violate a person's privacy.
Federal officials are already in the process of working up regulations on commercial drone use, but Schumer said he wants the process expedited because the technology is becoming much more widely used.
