Sen. Gillibrand Easily Wins Primary Challenge
NEW YORK (AP) -- Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has easily won a Democratic primary challenge in New York from Gail Goode, a little-known lawyer for New York City.
Goode had little money, no big-name party support and was not considered a threat to Gillibrand, who was appointed last year to fill the unexpired term of Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Goode said she ran to give New York voters a choice.
Gillibrand will face Joseph DioGuardi, the former congressman from suburban Westchester County. Gillibrand has a wide lead in the polls and far more campaign cash.
The win is a turnaround for DioGuardi, who had to petition his way on to the ballot after failing to muster enough party support at the state convention.
DioGuardi defeated Bruce Blakeman, a former Long Island local lawmaker, and David Malpass, a former Bear Stearns chief economist.
He is the father of former "American Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi.
