Seesaw Temperatures Likely To Pave The Way For More Potholes
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's prime time for potholes.
With temperatures expected to climb into the 40s this weekend before a return to the teens and single digits, the stage is set for the freeze and thaw that often leave roads as lumpy as chowder.
Cabbie Manny Luther said he fears it could only further dent his bottom line.
Seesaw Temperatures Will Likely Mean More Potholes
"It's actually affecting our business," he said. "Although the city already did (lower) the speed limit -- 25 -- but these potholes are actually making more slowdown, so that's the crazy thing."
Boris, a motorist, said potholes have already sent him to the tire shop twice this winter.
"This was on Maurice Avenue under the BQE," he said of his latest flat tire, adding he was only driving about 20 mph when he encountered the crater.
Vito, who was delivering large steel dumpsters, said he thinks the number of potholes this year is "about the same as every other season."
The city's Department of Transportation told the Queens Courier it has filled 20,000 potholes so far this year in Queens alone. That's on par with last season.
