Search Is On For Family's Cat Lost At JFK Airport
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A family is heartbroken after a treasured pet went missing at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
As CBS 2's Jessica Schneider reported, Gyzmo the cat somehow escaped from his crate after a flight from Paris, and now his owner is planning a search and hoping for the best.
"He's really become part of the family. We love him very much," said Agathe Louvet.
It was supposed to be a new beginning for Louvet. She's the first of her family to arrive in Brooklyn as part of a big move from Paris, France.
Her only travel companion was 4-year-old Gyzmo, who made the trans-Atlantic flight inside a crate.
"It should be. (Schneider: It should be secure?) I added this just in case," Louvet said.
But when Louvet arrived at JFK on Thursday night, the crate came out in baggage claim, but the cat was gone.
"I still can't believe this is happening to me," she said.
Baggage handlers at the airport told Louvet they saw the cat running near the plane's baggage ramp. They said they tried to catch him, but couldn't.
"This was open and they told me he had escaped through this," she said.
Louvet still hasn't told her three kids Gyzmo is missing. They move to Brooklyn in just three weeks.
"They really trusted me," Louvet said. "And they're really going to miss their cat, so hopefully we can find him."
The airline, XL Airways France, didn't return calls for comment, and Louvet said they haven't returned her calls either.
Now, she's joining forces with an organization called Where is Jack, which helps find pets lost during airline travel.
"He should still be alive. He's a strong body," she said.
A strong cat that Louvet hopes is still roaming around the airport.
