Search Is On For $1 Million Powerball Winner On Long Island
MOUNT SINAI, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Could you be a millionaire and not even know it?
As TV 10/55 Long Island Bureau Chief Richard Rose reported, New York Lottery officials are trying to track down the owner of a $1 million Powerball ticket purchased on Long Island in July.
Inside Carry-All Wines & Liquor in Mount Sinai, it's all customers are talking about -- the second-place Powerball ticket purchased there that still hasn't been cashed in.
Clerk Marylyn Deveny sold the winning ticket last July, but she also regularly buys lottery tickets herself and she wonders if she might unknowingly be holding it.
"I'm looking," she said. "I'm searching all my pockets and drawers at home to see if I might have misplaced it, but hopefully somebody will find it."
In Plainview on Thursday, the New York Lottery introduced its latest $1 million winners. But officials also are trying to get the attention of whoever purchased the still-unclaimed Mount Sinai ticket.
"Look in your glove compartment," said Gretchen Dizer of the New York Lottery. "Look in your drawers, anywhere you might have a ticket. Check through there."
And that's exactly what regular customers of the Mount Sinai store are doing.
"Maybe the wife has it," speculated John Stewart, of Miller Place.
"As far as my neighbors go, it's going down the block: 'Check your tickets! Check your numbers!" he added.
The ticket will expire in July and, if unclaimed by then, the $1 million will go back into the lottery pool for future winners to grab.
