Search Continues For Suspect Who Fired Shots, Hit MTA Bus In Harlem

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police have released images of an alleged gunman whose bullets struck an MTA bus on Madison Avenue in Harlem, narrowly missing passengers inside Monday evening.

A man outside that bus was wounded by the gunfire, CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported.

In the surveillance video, the male suspect can be seen running from the scene on Madison Avenue near E. 103rd St., after bullets struck the side and a window on a M3 bus filled with passengers, including Barbara Hines.

The suspect was last seen wearing a black du-rag, red hooded sweatshirt, black vest, dark colored jeans and red sneakers, police said.

"There was complete chaos, but the driver stayed calm of course and drove the bus to the next bus stop. People began to scream and fall," Hines said.

Investigators say the suspect fired at least two shots—one of which hit a 31-year-old man in the foot.

Police say the man who was shot had been standing on a sidewalk when a group of men started shooting. It's not clear whether he was the intended target.

"Had the bullet penetrated, it would have hit me in the head," Hines said.

Hines, who uses a motorized scooter, says she barely escaped being struck as well.

About 30 others were on the bus at the time, CBS2 reported.

One woman had to be taken away in an ambulance after falling to the ground, dropping to avoid the bullets.

The bus driver is OK, but shaken up, Burrell reported.

Those in Harlem are just eager to see the suspect caught.

"It was not my time to go, it was not anybody's time because no one on the bus was hurt," Hines said.

The man injured in the shooting was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Police are hoping someone will recognize the suspect, leading to an arrest.
