Police: World War II Veteran Richard Micheaux Located In Las Vegas
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A World War II veteran who had been missing for nearly a week has been located in a Las Vegas hospital, police said.
The family of Richard Micheaux had been praying for the 92-year-old man's safe return. But now, they do not know how he ended up in Las Vegas and police were investigating Monday night.
Micheaux's picture was posted in stores and shops throughout Hamilton Heights, where he has lived for nearly 50 years with his wife.
Every morning, Micheaux walked from his home on Convent Avenue to the deli on Amsterdam Avenue and West 145th Street to get the paper and coffee, which is what he was doing last Tuesday when he vanished, CBS 2's Matt Kozar reported.
"That day, like every day, he passed by here and waved. That's it," said New Way Cleaners owner Jose Cepeda said.
Greg Micheaux said his father has not had a history of mental illness.
"He was totally cognizant," Greg Micheaux said. "I'm hoping that maybe it's his first stage of dementia or Alzheimer's."
Greg Micheaux said his father had about $300 in cash with him when he disappeared. During the search police were trying to track his cellphone, which kept going to voicemail.
Greg Micheaux said his father's savings account was overdrawn, which they said was out of character. He said he hopes to fly to Las Vegas sometime this week to bring his father back.
Micheaux served as a staff sergeant in the Air Force during World War II. His son said he was shot in the back and wounded in the Pacific.
