Recovery Effort Continues For Missing Swimmer Off Jones Beach

WANTAGH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Crews are continuing to search for signs of a missing Massapequa man who disappeared while swimming off Jones Beach on Saturday.

State and county marine officials and family members resumed their search for 47-year-old Raymond Roth on Monday. Distraught lifeguards were also on the lookout.

Park police began the day acknowledging it is a recovery effort, and said their search by air, sea and beach patrols will continue.

Roth went into the ocean on Saturday around 3:30 p.m. near Field 6, his family said.

Roth's family said Roth is  an avid swimmer who came to Field 6 daily. On Saturday, his son told police  he  texted on the beach while his father swam in calm waters outside of the area patrolled by lifeguards, CBS 2's Carolyn Gusoff reported.

Raymond Roth was nowhere to be found when his son looked up from his phone. Neighbors told Gusoff he may have some health issues. "I think he had a heart problem a few weeks ago," a neighbor said.

"Always swim near a lifeguard," said chief lifeguard Don Campbell. "Above all, that's the best piece of advice I can give."
