Schumer: Ban People On No-Fly List From Buying Guns
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Sen. Charles Schumer is renewing a push for a bill that would put people appearing on the no-fly list on a no-buy gun list, too.
As WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini reported, disqualifying criteria for gun ownership includes being a convicted felon or domestic abuser. But being a suspected terrorist on the no-fly list does not disqualify potential gun buyers in the U.S.
"How could this be?" Schumer, D-N.Y., asked Sunday. "It sounds like something out of 'Alice in Wonderland.'"
The bill Schumer is backing was initially proposed by former President George W. Bush in 2007. It would close a loophole Schumer calls the "terror gap."
"The terror gap represents a gaping hole in our national security," Schumer said.
He said with the growing threat of ISIS around the world, it's more important than ever for lawmakers to act. Schumer is bringing the bill to the Senate floor after the Thanksgiving recess.
"Unless we fix it fast, it is only a matter of time before it is exploited to do horrible damage," he said.
