School Board To Cover Religious Symbols At N.J. High School Graduation
NEPTUNE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Graduates at a Jersey shore high school will follow a different path as they continue a nearly 70-year tradition after the district reached a compromise with the American Civil Liberties Union.
The Neptune Township graduation will take place at the Ocean Grove Great Auditorium, but the school board has agreed to cover religious symbols and students and guests will enter through side and back doors to avoid a 20-foot cross on the building in the religious enclave.
A person had complained to the ACLU about religious references and Christian iconography in the 19th century building.
ACLU communications director Katie Wang told the Asbury Park Press the group is satisfied the district has taken steps for all to enjoy the graduation "without feeling like outsiders based on religious differences."
