Indictment Unsealed In Scarsdale Murder, Grand Jury Indicts Attorney In Wife's Death
SCARSDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Westchester County unsealed an indictment Tuesday for a man charged with murdering his estranged wife in their Scarsdale home.
Julius Reich is charged with murder after allegedly stabbing his wife, Dr. Robin Goldman, 58, 21 times while she was in the shower on Jan. 20.
After the attack, prosecutors say Reich allegedly walked to the kitchen -- leaving a trail of blood -- smoked a cigarette and called 911.
Reich pleaded not guilty and signed a series of protective orders at the judge's discretion, CBS2's Lou Young reported.
"As you know this case is a tragedy for everybody that's involved. I've had the opportunity over the last week to spend a significant amount of time this past week with my client and his main concern is for his children and their well being," John Pappalardo, Reich's attorney, said.
The murder -- the first in the upscale Heathcote section of Scarsdale in 40 years -- has stunned everyone who knew the couple.
Everybody's upset; everybody's shocked," Marcy Klein, a local business owner, said. "None of us can believe what happened."
Dr. Robin Goldman was a revered pediatrician at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.
Reich had filed for divorce in August 2015. Things were apparently amicable until a few weeks before Goldman's death. The district attorney said Goldman grew fearful, changed the locks on the door, and talked about getting an order of protection against Reich.
Somehow, police said, he let himself in and ambushed Goldman as she showered, leaving a trail of blood as he left her to call 911 from the kitchen.
Reich has three grown children still reeling from their mother's brutal death.
As CBS2's Young reported, it was difficult to reconcile the man seen in court with the description given by police of ablood covered suspect calmly smoking a cigarette as his wife bled out in the bathroom.
Police said there have been no domestic violence or criminal calls at the address dating back to 1994, CBS2 reported in an earlier story.
Reich is expected back in court next month, the formal charges against him are second degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
