Police: Homeowners Fight Off Masked Intruders In Scarsdale
SCARSDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Scarsdale couple fought off two masked men who broke into their home early Wednesday morning, police say.
Police said the husband and wife were in bed when they were woken up by the sound of two men running through the house.
The two masked men got into the home on Berwick Road around 2:15 a.m. through a front-lawn-facing window, police said.
"I think it's horrible that people are entering people's homes when people are in them," Carol Wolfe, who lives across the street, told Carlin. "It's one thing to rob a house when everyone's on vacation – it's still terrible to enter someone's home – but to have somebody intrude in your home when you're sleeping is absolutely horrendous."
Police said the couple confronted the intruders and a fight ensued. The two men ran away.
There was no word on what, if anything, was stolen.
The husband and wife were injured, but not seriously, so they did not go to the hospital, Carlin reported.
"I hope they are OK," a woman driving by said.
The home is now guarded by an officer.
Police said they have not linked the crime to a pattern in the neighborhood, but residents worry it could become one if the suspects are not caught.
"If thieves are successful, they're going to come back," one resident said. "It's kind of low hanging fruit for them."
"We have a feeling of comfort and safety," another resident added. "Maybe it's a false sense of security."
Police are searching around the neighborhood for surveillance video of the suspects.
They want people to know that while home invasions with residents inside are rare, when they happen you should immediately flee if you can, or lock yourself in a room and call 911.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Scarsdale Police Department at 914-722-1200 or click here to use the anonymous tips feature.
