Sara Errani Upset In 2nd Round Of US Open
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Flavia Pennetta ousted fourth-seeded Sara Errani 6-3, 6-1 in an all-Italian second-round match Thursday for the biggest upset so far at the US Open.
It was never a contest, with Pennetta going up a break in the first game and finishing off Errani in 1 hour, 11 minutes.
They are close friends and teammates on Italy's Fed Cup teams. Pennetta was the first Italian woman ranked in the top 10, but has fallen to 83rd. Her slide began when she missed the end of last year, including the US Open, with a right wrist injury.
Errani was the French Open finalist and a semifinalist at the US Open last year but has made it past the second round in only one of the four majors in 2013.
Jelena Jankovic (9) of Serbia was among the early winners Thursday, defeating Alisa Kleybanova of Russia 6-3, 6-2.
