Jets Sign WR David Nelson, Release Ben Obomanu
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The New York Jets have released wide receiver Ben Obomanu and are bringing in David Nelson to help offset injuries to Santonio Holmes and Stephen Hill.
Obomanu had one catch for 8 yards in the team's 38-13 loss to Tennessee on Sunday, and was called for three penalties. The team announced his release and the signing of Nelson on Wednesday.
Nelson had 94 receptions for 1,042 yards and eight touchdowns in parts of three seasons with the Buffalo Bills.
Holmes, sidelined most of last season with a foot injury, tweaked a hamstring at Tennessee and is expected to miss a few games.
"Nothing new on him with the hamstring," Jets coach Rex Ryan said Monday. "Obviously, he didn't finish the game, so we'll see where that is. And the same thing with (Chris) Ivory and (Dee) Milliner that stayed back. We'll see how they progress and maybe we'll have more of an update on Wednesday for you on those two. But as far as Holmes is concerned, I know he didn't finish the game and it was a hamstring injury."
Hill suffered a concussion in the same game, and his availability for the Jets' game Monday night at Atlanta is uncertain.
"As far as the hit on Stephen, it was not flagged," Ryan said.
The Jets also worked out some other wide receivers, including Josh Cribbs, according to published reports.
