Sandy-Ravaged L.I. Community Sends Aid To Tornado-Ravaged Oklahoma
ISLAND PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - A still recovering hurricane-ravaged community on Long Island has extended a helping hand to the tornado victims of Oklahoma.
In just a few short days, Sandy-ravaged Island Park residents raised thousands of dollars in supplies for Oklahoma tornado victims.
"From Far Rockaway to Mastic Beach, Massapequa, Freeport, it just went, in six days, we raised I think like, 15 grand," organizer Tommy Asher told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs.
Island Park Helps Oklahoma
Two big trailers filled with help are making their way west - everything from pet supplies to blankets, clothing, and even some heavy tools to help rebuild.
"You know, our government will be there in the long haul, but right now it's the people," Asher said.
He added that superstorm Sandy taught us how important people are in times of need.
"We know how it feels. I know we know what it's like to need that little shot in the arm of help and so we're going to give Oklahoma a couple days of our time. It's the best we can do and then we're going to come back and continue doing what we got to do," he said.
