Sandy-Ravaged Islip Beach Back, Stronger Than Ever

ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The rebuilding of Sandy-ravaged Islip Beach is finally complete with the reopening of its new shore-front restaurant and more durable boardwalk.

Town supervisor Tom Croci cut the ribbon Thursday and told WCBS 880's Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs the beach is back-- better and stronger than ever.

"The materials of course that we're using are stronger, the design is designed to deal with those high winds and it's also energy efficient," Croci said. "I can't tell you how many calls and comments we've gotten about how much they enjoy coming to Islip Beach and how much they enjoy this new restaurant."

One of them being from beach-goer Steve Faletta.

"I've been coming to this beach for a long time," Faletta told 1010 WINS. "I have enjoyed the summer here at this beach more than the last 30-some-odd years. It's been wonderful."

Civic Leader Kay Erwood couldn't be happier.

"This beach is a treasure, it's an oasis by the bay," she said.
