Sandy Hook Beach Area Reopens More Than Six Months After Sandy
SANDY HOOK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A popular swimming and fishing destination along the Jersey Shore has reopened a little more than six months after sustaining damage in Superstorm Sandy.
Gates to the Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook opened Wednesday morning to accommodate anglers. Sandy Hook is a prime spot for bluefish and striped bass in the spring.
Many of Sandy Hook's historic buildings and many of its beaches were damaged by the Oct. 29 storm.
Officials say the park's nude beach and beaches B and North will be open by Memorial Day. Parking will be limited while lots are repaired.
Meanwhile, the deadline is quickly approaching for New Jersey storm victims to apply for federal aid.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency said it has received more than 300 new registrations in the last 24 hours.
Residents have until midnight to register for disaster assistance by calling 800-621-FEMA, applying online, or visiting a disaster center.
Tonight is also the deadline for small businesses to return applications for special low interest loans meant to help with rebuilding.
