San Bernardino Shooting 3rd Deadliest Shooting In 20 Years, Sources Say

NEW YORK ( CBSNewYork) -- A deadly shooting in San Bernardino that left upwards of 14 dead and 18 wounded is already considered the third deadliest shooting in the United States in the last 20 years.

Wednesday's shooting falls after the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Conn., where 27 were killed.

The 2007 Virginia Tech shooting, also known as the Virginia Tech massacre, remains the deadliest of these incidents, claiming the lives of 32 people.

The San Bernardino shooting takes the place of the 1999 Columbine shooting, where there were 13 fatalities. The Fort Hood shooting in 2009 also had 13 fatalities.

According to the website ShootingTracker.com, there have been at least 351 mass shootings in the U.S. this year.

There were 365 mass shootings in 2013, and 336 mass shootings in 2014, according to the website.

The term 'mass shooting' applies to any incident where four or more people were shot.
