Sean Payton Staying As Saints Coach
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One widely speculated candidate for the Giants' head coaching vacancy is no longer available.
New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton has agreed to remain with the team.
There had been reports saying the Super Bowl-winning coach was interested in moving on, which would have made him one of the top candidates up for grabs. He was linked in reports to jobs in New York, Miami, Indianapolis, San Francisco and Philadelphia.
Payton, however, was under contract for two more seasons. The Saints were reportedly considering parting with him in exchange for draft-pick compensation, but that never materialized.
"This is where I plan on coaching," Payton said during a news conference Wednesday. "I don't envision myself coaching any other club.
"I know it appeared there was a looming decision, but I think this is really me saying again, 'Here I am, and nothing's changing, and I plan on finishing my career here."
Payton, a former Giants assistant under Jim Fassel, is 87-57 over nine seasons with the Saints and led the team to a Super Bowl title following the 2009 season. New Orleans, however, finished 7-9 each of the past two years.
The Giants, meanwhile, have already interviewed their own offensive coordinator, Ben McAdoo, and plan to interview defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase and former Bills coach Doug Marrone.
New York is looking to replace Tom Coughlin, who stepped down Monday after 12 seasons.
