So, what are they doing with the old ones? Well, they're selling them for $20 each, of course.

"We're trying to take lemon to make lemonade. Faced with this mandate, what we've done is we've given our residents a chance to buy a sentimental piece of Rye and people have loved it. They've really responded," says Rye city councilman Joe Sack. "We've really captured lightning in a bottle here."

Sack says he came up with the idea. He says it's a great way for the city to make a few thousand dollars and for residents to have their very own piece of Rye.

He says they've only replaced about a third of the signs so far, so they will have plenty more to sell.

"Every penny counts, but the focus is not making money. The focus is really drawing attention to the unfunded mandate and then also giving people a nice way to own a piece of Rye," says Sack.

Many cities, including New York City, are being required to switch signs from all capital letters to mixed upper and lower case letters.
