Report: Deal Between Jets, Fitzpatrick Unlikely Before Camp Opens
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It is unlikely the Jets and free agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will agree on a new contract before training camp opens Thursday, according to a report.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that his sources have told him a deal does not appear to be imminent.
Talks between the team and the QB have been at an impasse for months.
According to the New York Daily News, the Jets have submitted several offers to Fitzpatrick in the hope of getting him signed in time to join his teammates in Florham Park, New Jersey.
Though the exact terms of the offers were not immediately known, the Daily News speculated that they would figure to fall somewhere in the neighborhood of the reported three-year, $24 million offer that Fitzpatrick has scoffed at for weeks. However, the Jets may be ready to sweeten the guaranteed money, long figured to be a sticking point in the negotiations, the newspaper added.
Jets rookies and veterans report to camp Wednesday and workouts begin Thursday. If Fitzpatrick does not sign by Thursday, Geno Smith will open camp as the team's first-string QB.
