Rutgers University Unveils Plan To Remake Campus With New Buildings, Boardwalk
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A new vision presented to the Rutgers University Board of Governors on Tuesday, includes a proposal for a boardwalk along the Raritan River.
Another proposal called for a new dining hall and student center. Brower Commons and the Rutgers Student Center would be demolished to create a new hub for the college campus.
A foot bridge that would link the New Brunswick and Piscataway campuses was also included in the plans as well as a high-tech research park on the Livingston and Busch campuses near the Rutgers Athletic Center and the building of a faculty housing village on Cook campus in New Brunswick.
University President Robert Barchi told NJ.com that Rutgers hopes to use public-private partnerships to help fund the proposals.
"I think if you can't generate a plan that is strategic and tactical that can be implemented, you haven't done anybody a service,'' he said. "It's one thing to create a vision. I'm all for a vision, but that's not what this is. This is a plan. It's something we intend to accomplish.''
Barchi said the university was trying to determine what each phase of the plan would cost.
Proposals for the Newark and Camden campuses are expected to be revealed in the future.
