Rutgers University Student Assembly Calls For More Diversity For Mascot
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Students at Rutgers University have demanded changes in the school's mascot.
The school's student assembly recently passed a bill to diversify the white, blue-eyed "Scarlet Knight" mascot.
The assembly wants to add other mascots that could be black, Latino Asian, female, or third-gender, CBS2 reported.
In the Daily Targum student newspaper, student assembly parliamentarian Emmet Brennan said the current mascot "does not represent how diverse we are as a school," and that student organization should be allowed to determine how many mascots they would like and what they would represent.
The bill does not call for the elimination of the current Scarlet Knight, or any changes to him, Brennan told the publication.
