Rutgers To Dedicate Transition Center Named For Tyler Clementi
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The family of Tyler Clementi will join leaders at Rutgers University and elected officials Monday to dedicate a new center named after the Rutgers student, who killed himself after his roommate used a webcam to see him having an intimate encounter with another man.
U.S. Rep. Rush Holt Jr. (D-N.J.) and U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) will join Tyler Clementi's parents, Joseph and Jane Clementi, to dedicate the Tyler Clementi Center, which will be devoted to creating new programs and approaches to help young people as they make the transition from home to college life.
The center will offer lectures and seminars, as well as training, on issues such as the use and misuse of technology and social media, bullying, and youth suicide – particularly among LGBT youth.
The center is a collaboration with the Tyler Clementi Foundation which was launched by the student parents.
Clementi, 18, killed himself by jumping off the George Washington Bridge in September 2010, just weeks into his first year at Rutgers.
Roommate Dharun Ravi was convicted last year of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation and other counts and served less than a month in jail. He is appealing his conviction.
