Rutgers Students On Alert After Robbery In Broad Daylight
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Students at Rutgers University are on edge after an a pair of bandits on bicycles robbed a student at knifepoint in broad daylight this week.
Students received an alarming crime alert from the school Wednesday about the robbery, CBS 2's Tracee Carrasco reported.
According to the alert, a 20-year-old female student was walking along Nichol Avenue and Seamen Street around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when two men on bicycles pulled a knife on her and then stole her cellphone and bag.
The victim was not injured.
The robbery has left students who frequently walk the busy stretch of road fearing for their safety.
"I was just shocked that it was at 11:30 a.m. here in my neighborhood," said Yanelle Pabon. "I live right around the corner."
"I guess it's not as safe as we think it is," said Jorge Narvaez. "And it was in the middle of the day. It was in a relatively busy area."
"It's a shame people have stooped that low," added Shay Gilbert. "So it's kind of scary."
Rutgers students Carrasco spoke with said they've been receiving more crime alerts from the university lately.
Police describe the suspects as Hispanic males in the mid 20s who speak with accents, Carrasco reported. One man wore a gray hoodie, and the other wore a black hoodie.
Until the suspects are caught, police are reminding students to be alert, walk in groups and report any suspicious activity.
"That definitely will keep me on guard," Gilbert said.
