Suspect Fires Gun At Car In Rutgers Parking Lot In Piscataway, Police Say
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A suspect fired a gun at a vehicle in a Rutgers University parking lot in Piscataway, New Jersey Friday afternoon, police said.
John Crown told CBS2's Tracee Carrasco that he was trying to get his car out of the lot when he ran into police tape, smashed vehicles, investigators, and a trail of debris.
"Apparently there were gunshots, so we were really confused at what happened," he said.
Rutgers police said around 4:50 p.m., two suspects were in an altercation in Lot 103, at 61 Road 3 in Piscataway.
Witnesses said one suspect had a machete, the other a handgun. The suspect with the gun fired into a parked vehicle, and then fled in a black sport-utility vehicle toward Road 1 and away from campus, police said.
No injuries were reported.
No useful description of the suspects was available.
"It's kind of scary to know that I live a few hundred yards away that there's gun shots and everything," he said.
"I've only been here for like three weeks, so it's pretty crazy that something like this has already happened, but hopefully it won't again" J.D. Marner added.
Anyone with information on the incident was asked to call the Rutgers police Detective Bureau at (848) 932-8025.
Rutgers police also advised the university community to reduce their chances of being a crime victim by securing points of entry to all buildings and workspaces, remaining alert and aware of surroundings, avoiding propping open exterior doors, and immediately reporting suspicious activity to police.
