Rutgers, Coach Flood Add 23 Players To Scarlet Knights
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Rutgers coach Kyle Flood filled a major need in the secondary and added depth at running back, the defensive line and quarterback Wednesday.
The second-year coach signed 23 players for the Scarlet Knights' final season in the Big East Conference.
In keeping with the tradition started by former coach Greg Schiano, the majority of players came from New Jersey with the rest coming from New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Florida. Flood also made a small venture into Big 10 territory, signing a linebacker from Michigan.
Flood, who only had two days to recruit last season after replacing Schiano, seemed pleased with a class which didn't seem to have a can't-miss star. But he added speed without sacrificing size.
Star running back Jawan Jamison recently decided to forgo his final two years of eligibility to enter the NFL draft.
Rutgers went 9-4 last season, finishing tied for the regular-season conference title. Their loss in the Russell Athletic Bowl to Virginia Tech ended a run of five straight bowl victories for the Scarlet Knights and kept them from recording their first double-digit win season since 2006.
