One such person is Anne McInnis, who runs 12: Modern Antiquities, an antiques and jewelry shop in Hudson, New York - a two-and-a-half hour driver from her old job as a textiles design director at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia in Manhattan.
She was laid off about a year ago when the economy went sour.
"I thought things were going really well at Martha Stewart and people liked me. So, it wasn't a personal thing. It's not a personal thing for anybody. It's this collective problem we all have that we're all trying to deal with," she said.
After delving into the interview process, her plan B, she decided to go into business for herself, her plan C.
"It's sort of an obsessively curated mix of anything from antiquities to period antiques to mid-century, we have designer fashion and fine jewelry," she says. "I've always wanted to have a shop and Hudson's a great town. It allows you to have a nice audience in a relatively inexpensive, you know, overhead, as opposed to the city."

Anne admits it's a tough retail market and she's not closing the door to other opportunities.
"I'm very fluid right now and this is fun. I love it. You know, it's hard work, but I love it," she said.
Her shop is located at 345 Warren Street, Hudson, NY 12534.
