The new budget, which was different from the one proposed by county executive Scott Vanderhoef, will save more than 500 jobs and keeps Summit Hospital open while restoring money to police programs and non-profit agencies.

About $60 million will be borrowed to help pay the $52 million deficit and that will be paid back with revenue from a 3/8 percent increase of the sales tax.

Property taxes will increase about 2 percent, but in reality, it will be more like 30 percent because of a surcharge to pay off a loan.

The Journal News reports that on average, homeowners will pay $172 more.

The question now: will the county executive use his veto pen?
