Rockland Cop Helps Woman Revive Baby Son Who Stopped Breathing
SUFFERN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - A Rockland County woman whose infant son stopped breathing was able to revive him thanks to a police officer's calm instructions on the phone.
Suffern Officer Tim Dunn says the woman was scared and nervous when she called 911 Monday afternoon.
She said her son wasn't breathing and may have been choking on saliva or vomit, the Journal News reported.
Dunn told the paper he reassured her and instructed her to check the baby's chest. He continued to give her directions, telling her to turn him on his side and try clearing his airway with her finger or a tissue.
"It was nerve-wracking for about four or five minutes," Dunn, 52, told the Journal News.
Within minutes, he said the baby gurgled and then began to cry.
"When I heard him crying I was beyond relieved and grateful that she was able to clear his airway," Dunn told the paper.
Paramedics arrived moments after the baby boy began crying, and began treatment. The boy was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital.
He said he's been in similar situations during his 30-year law enforcement career.
He's retired from the Spring Valley police department and now works part-time in Suffern.
