1010 WINS' Kathleen Maloney reports
The annual fire department chili cook-off fundraiser was cancelled because the Rockland County Health Department caught wind of the event and determined it violates state regulations.
Since the chili was being served to the public, it must be prepared in permanent kitchens, not in private homes. The Health Department wanted the 35 private kitchens to have permits.
Firefighter Dan Goswick says they're not angry, but they are disappointed.
"The rep from the county has a job to do and he did his job," Goswick told WCBS 880 reporter Sean Adams. "So, we understand."
Goswick told 1010 WINS' Kathleen Maloney that no one has reported getting sick in the years that the cook-0ff has been held. The fire department has made as much as $7,000 from the cook-off.
It was the firefighters' own advertising that caught the attention of an inspector. The health commissioner says once her department knew about the cook-off locations, it had to intervene for public safety.
