Rockaway Newspaper 'The Wave' Works To Put Out New Edition After Sandy
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - After being hit hard, a newspaper in the Rockaways is working hard to get back on its feet.

The Rockaway Beach Boulevard offices of 'The Wave' were destroyed by Sandy and the weekly staff is now working out a rented second floor office on rented computers to put out Friday's first post-storm edition.
"Whatever was here is gone and most importantly was what was gone is that in the back we had an archive room," said Sandy Bernstein, the paper's general manager.
They lost over a century's worth of articles.
"113 years of books," editor Howard Schwach told WCBS 880 reporter Marla Diamond. "It's my history. My birth announcement was in one of those books. My Bar Mitzvah announcement was in one of those books."
The small paper means so much to the community.
"Guy walked down the street the other day and a dozen people grabbed me. 'When is The Wave coming back? We miss it.' and that's nice to know," he said.
"We believe we're part of the community. You know, it's part of what you see Friday mornings on the newsstand. It's something that you've come to expect, people have come to expect. We want to meet those expectations," said Bernstein.

Schwach knows what he wants the first post-storm edition to look like.
"We want this issue to be kind of an archive - mostly pictures - so that people can look at it 30 years from now and see," he said.
It will be collector's item for sure, reported Diamond.
