Surf's Up As Residents Hit Hermine-Fueled Waves Off Rockaway Beach
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Hermine may have ruined Labor Day plans for most going to the beach on Monday, but some city surfers are saying the storm's bringing some of the best waves yet.

Despite warnings posted on entry ways that said 'No Surfing,' several surfers came out to the Rockaways on Monday for the prospect of Hermine-fueled waves.
"It's still intimidating out there," one surfer told WCBS 880's Mike Smeltz. "But more intimidating than the waves are the police officers."
After some injuries to swimmers on Sunday, officals were out on the beach calling surfers in -- threatening fines for those who stay in the water.
There was a brief scare at the beach after someone called in a report of a surfer being dragged into the water by rip currents. But after nearly an hour-long search by two NYPD helicopters, the FDNY reported the claim as unfounded.
New York City closed its beaches Monday because of rip currents. The ban has extended into Tuesday, officials said.
