Robert Pattinson Makes First Public Appearance Since Kristen Stewart's Affair
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Robert Pattinson has decided to come back to the spotlight.
The 26-year-old actor has been out of sight since learning last month that his girlfriend and "Twilight'' co-star Kristen Stewart had an affair with a married movie director. A tabloid printed photos of the illicit dalliance, breaking the hearts of "Twilight'' fans worldwide and prompting Stewart and the director to issue public apologies to their loved ones.
Fans had been lining up for days outside the Museum of Modern Art to catch a glimpse of Pattinson when appeared at the premiere of his new movie "Cosmopolis" on Monday night.
On the red carpet, an upbeat Pattison wasn't asked directly about the cheating scandal -- media were limited on the number of questions they could ask -- but he talked at one point about the movie's steamy sex scenes.
"I feel a little uncomfortable doing that. But I mean, some of the scenes in this were like complicated acting scenes, like during a sex scene which makes it -- it's a very strange experience," he said with a smile.
It was his first public appearance since news broke of Stewart's affair.
Fans from as far away as Georgia and Montreal had waited outside the MoMA for as many as three days to show their support for Pattinson.
"He's on too many of these magazines," one fan said. "I think that most of them are made up stories, I don't think that it's accurate and I don't buy them because I don't want to support them."
Many of the fans had little to say about the affair, calling it a "private" matter and "his business," 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa reported.
Before the premiere, Pattinson taped an episode of "The Daily Show'' with Jon Stewart, which aired Monday night.
Pattinson is set to appear on "Good Morning America'' on Wednesday.
"Cosmopolis,'' the David Cronenberg drama, hits theaters on Friday.
