Robbie Cano: Yanks Will Make Playoffs Because 'God Has A Plan For Mo'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's not going to be easy for the Yankees to make the playoffs this season.
The Bombers are three games behind both Tampa Bay and Texas for the second Wild Card berth in the American League with just 12 games to play. And they have teams in their way. The Orioles are 1/2 game ahead of New York and the Indians are 2 1/2 games in front.
But forget the standings. Even after getting swept by the rival Red Sox this weekend, superstar second baseman Robinson Cano believes that New York will make the postseason.
The five-time All-Star simply believes that it's meant to be.
With legendary closer Mariano Rivera set to retire at the end of the season, Cano has faith that a higher power will help the Yanks and Mo secure that coveted Wild Card berth.
"We will (make the playoffs)," the 30-year-old told Newsday. "I think God has a plan for Mo."
New York was just one game behind Tampa Bay at the start of this past weekend, but the Rays took two of three from the lowly Twins to gain two games on the Yankees.
New York begins a three-game set against the Blue Jays on Tuesday. The Yankees will return home to face the Giants at Yankee Stadium on Friday and then will host the Rays for three critical games next Tuesday.
The club will conclude its 2013 regular season with a series in Houston.
Recently, Yankees manager Joe Girardi estimated that it would take 90 wins for his team to squeeze into the postseason. Currently sitting at 79-71, the Yanks would have to go 11-1 the rest of the way to reach that mark.
Can they do it?
"It might come down from that a little bit," Girardi told Newsday with a smile. "89 might do it."
