Rikers Island Inmate Charged With Punching Intern
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Rikers Island inmate is facing assault charges after prosecutors say he punched a medical intern and fractured her jaw in two places.
Joseph McRae was charged Thursday in the Bronx in connection with the April 16 attack in the jail's psychiatric wing.
The medical intern's eye socket and sinuses were also fractured, and her injuries required surgery, prosecutors said.
McRae is scheduled for arraignment June 24 in Bronx Supreme Court pending results of a mental competency examination.
The 24-year-old was being held at Rikers on unrelated charges for a similar assault against a woman at New York's Penn Station last summer, police said.
