Rikers Island Correction Officer Accused Of Smuggling Contraband
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A correction officer at Rikers Island is accused of smuggling contraband into the prison.
As WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported, the Department of Investigation followed a tip that led them to correction officer Kevin McKoy.
DOI Commissioner Mark Peters said McKoy is charged with trying to smuggle 16 packages in the lower part of his pants.
The packages contained "Seven scalpel blades, over 120 grams of synthetic marijuana, as well as 10 suboxone strips," Peters said.
Inside McKoy's car, investigators said they found marijuana and a knife. At his home, more suboxone, synthetic marijuana, cocaine and nine additional scalpels were found, Lamb reported.
Peters said one of the major root causes of violence at Rikers Island is smuggling contraband.
