Ridge Man Accused Of Driving Under Influence During Fatal Crash Set To Face Judge
RIDGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - A Long Island man is set to face a judge on Sunday following Saturday's car crash that killed two teenage passengers.
20-year-old Thomas Smith of Ridge is charged with driving under the influence of prescription drugs. He had four passengers in his car as they returned from Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, but Smith took medication and ended up falling asleep at the wheel, police said, slamming into a tree off the William Floyd Parkway.
"He was in a state that we believe was impaired," Suffolk County Police Sgt. Daniel Molloy said. "Speed definitely appears to be a factor because of the impact."
The victims include Smith's live-in girlfriend, 19-year-old Jacqueline Salvador of Ridge, and 17-year-old Ryan Baumgartner of Rocky Point.
