Richard Hughes Arrested For DWI Following Deadly Accident On Route 110 In North Amityville
NORTH AMITYVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Suffolk County arrested a man for DWI after he allegedly struck two pedestrians in North Amityville early Monday morning.
Authorities said Richard Hughes, 49, was driving a 2002 Lincoln Continental southbound on Route 110 around 5:56 a.m. Police said his vehicle struck two pedestrians near Ritter Avenue.
Merell Jerman, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Breuton Byrd, 18, was taken to Nassau University Medical Center and was listed in critical condition.
Hughes, of East Islip, was charged with driving while intoxicated and will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Tuesday.
Meanwhile in Nassau County, 42-year-old Richard Santiago, of Hempstead, was arrested on drunken driving charges after police said he crashed his van into two cars and an MTA bus.
Police said the impact was so strong, the impact of the crash caused the bus to hit the side wall of a nearby McDonald's. The 51-year-old bus driver suffered face and knee injuries.
In addition, the 27-year-old driver of one of the cars was also injured. Santiago, who has been charged with driving while intoxicated and other charges, also sustained a head injury in the crash, police said.
