Rex Ryan: Bills Are 'The Only Team In New York'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan took a playful jab at his former team and their co-tenants Thursday by bringing up a geographically accurate fact -- and a sore subject in two states.
When asked by WHEC-TV in Rochester about his participation in WFAN radio's June 3 charity softball game at Yankee Stadium, Ryan slipped in a zinger: "Yeah, I doubt they'll still give me (a standing ovation) there. But it'll be good. You know, hey, we're the only team in New York anyway. So I thought I'd help out that other city down there."
Though the Jets and Giants have "New York" in their names, both teams practice and play in New Jersey. Ryan was fired in December after six seasons with the Jets and landed with the Bills, the only football franchise whose mail gets delivered to a N.Y. zip code.
Still, he can't hide his affinity for the big city. When the "Boomer & Carton" show asked Ryan to participate in their star-studded softball game, he was quick to say yes despite offseason workouts on Buffalo's schedule. In fact, he was the first celebrity announced for the event that will benefit the Silver Shield Foundation, the NYC PBA Widows' and Children's Fund, and the families of fallen NYPD officers Brian Moore, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu.
"The cause is the No. 1 thing, obviously," Ryan said. "So, hey, I'll go out and do it. I just hope the ball's not hit to me."
