Retired Nassau Police Officer Suing County, Department Following Arrest And Acquittal
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A retired Nassau County police officer is suing the county and the department, claiming discrimination and false arrest.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, Dolores Sharpe said her nightmare began two years ago on Black Friday when she tried to go shopping in West Hempstead.
That's when two police officers accused her of blocking their view as they were conducting an investigation. Even though she showed her badge, she was handcuffed for alleged harassment and resisting arrest, Hall reported.
The 20-year veteran of the force claimed she was the victim of false arrest, racial discrimination and verbal and physical abuse during the incident.
Sharpe pleaded not guilty to the charges and was acquitted. But she said after she returned to work, she was treated like an outsider and ultimately decided to retire.
"I was not respected or valued by the Nassau County Police Department," Sharpe said.
Now, Sharpe has filed a lawsuit, which also alleges the department covers up and tolerates unreasonable and illegal use of force against minorities, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.
"To address the wrong and to stand up as a victim. I will not let you continue the abuse that you allow," Sharpe said.
Nassau County and the police department had no comment.
Sharpe's attorney, Fred Brewington, is seeking $24 million.
