Resorts A.C. Adopting 1920s Theme; Street Name Nixed
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (AP) - Resorts Atlantic City, the nation's first casino to open outside Nevada, will adopt a roaring '20s theme to capitalize on the success of "Boardwalk Empire,'' the HBO series about Prohibition-era Atlantic City.
Dennis Gomes, who is buying the casino-hotel with developer Morris Bailey, says dealers, cocktail servers, bellhops and others will dress in 1920s-period costumes, music from that period will play constantly, and even the drinks and casino shows will have a roaring '20s theme.
Gomes says it's part of the fascination with "Boardwalk Empire,'' but also a nod to Resorts' own history. Its main building was built in the 1920s and the decor is already faithful to that period.
The changes will take effect in early December.
Meanwhile, real-life political and rackets boss - and current posthumous TV star - Enoch "Nucky'' Johnson isn't getting his way this time.
The subject of the hit HBO series "Boardwalk Empire,'' Johnson ruled Atlantic City during Prohibition.
But a move by city councilman Dennis Mason to rename a one-block section of Belmont Avenue - near a hotel where Johnson used to live - as "Nucky's Way'' didn't fly.
According to The Press of Atlantic City, the city council voted down the proposed street name change at Wednesday night's meeting.
Councilman Moisse Delgado, one of five who voted against the measure, says Nucky's activity was always questionable.
