Residents Of Bushwick Building Fuming After Change Of Address Leaves Them With No Mail
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Residents of a Brooklyn building are frustrated because they're not receiving their mail.
The building at the corner of Knickerbocker Avenue and Eldert Street in Bushwick essentially has an identity crisis, CBS2's Valerie Castro reported.
"The whole situation is ridiculous and weird," resident Diana Diaz told Castro.
That crisis means residents aren't getting their mail, Castro reported.
"We pay our rent, so we should be able to get mail," Diaz said.
The building began leasing to tenants in November, Castro reported.
The USPS says original construction plans put the the entrance to the building - and the mailboxes - at 803 Knickerbocker Avenue. Somewhere along the way, plans changed - along with the mailing address and the front door - but the postmaster was never notified, Castro reported.
The building now has the address of 301 Eldert Street, and a completely different zip code.
"So their mail is actually getting delivered to the East New York station, even though their physical location is in the Wyckoff [Heights] zip code," explained Roxanne Hosein of the USPS.
Resident say they've asked building management to re-register the building the correct address, Castro reported. The USPS has also made the request, with no results, Castro reported.
"They haven't, unfortunately," Hosein said.
"It's like, what's so hard? You fill out paperwork again, you pay them the money, it gets done, we get our mail, the problem is over," said Diaz.
Tenants say their mailboxes now sit empty, and some have resorted to other means.
"So I basically went out and purchased a PO box, and I have to take a cab to and from the post office," said resident Yolanda White.
Castro went by the management office and left voicemails for the managers involved, but requests for comment were not returned.
As a workaround, the USPS says it will allow residents to change their address in the system. Those that do will begin receiving mail by the end of the week.
